The Today Show
There are moments in life that feel surreal, like you’ve somehow slipped into another dimension or wandered onto the set of a blockbuster film.
That’s exactly what happened to me one morning at NBC Studios in New York City, while accompanying Rabia Chaudry on her book launch for her memoir, Fatty Fatty Boom Boom — an incredible moment in itself.
But what happened in the green room? Let’s just say it was a plot twist I couldn’t have scripted in my head if I tried.
As we stepped into a room filled with people, the buzz of energy was undeniable. I glanced around, trying to make my 5’8’’ frame IN THREE INCH HEELS smaller in the space, when it hit me. I was standing next to Deadpool and Buddy the Elf. Yes, you read that right. There, in the flesh, were Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell, two comedic legends deep in an animated conversation.
I froze. Twitching back and forth, looking at them — one and then the other and then back again.
Now, as someone who can lean towards the socially awkward side (to put it mildly), I did what any starstruck fan would do: I asked if I was interrupting them.
Ryan: No, no, we were just having a VERY deep conversation. dramatic pause (followed by laughter) as he stuck his hand out to shake mine.
As I introduced them to Rabia, Ryan turned to speak to her and I touched Will Ferrells arm like a person petting a cat. What is wrong with me? I have no idea. "
Me: I watched Elf again last night in my hotel room.
Will Ferrell: GREAT! in the style of Buddy the Elf
What I wanted to say was a million different things but alas, my brain was short circuiting. I made a Reel about it.
As consummate professionals, they were both gracious and kind, instantly diffusing my awkwardness with their natural charm. They didn’t even blink when I asked for a quick selfie, because let’s be honest — my kids would never, ever believe me.
Before I could process the fact that I had just interacted with these two legends, they were whisked away for their interview on the Today Show to promote their film Spirited. Along with them, the one and only Octavia Spencer. Yes, that Octavia Spencer. As we shared a brief but electrifying glance, my inner fangirl’s head practically exploded with glee.
And Rabia? She handled it all with her usual grace, reminding me why she’s a true star in our world.
